Too Faced Holiday 2011

I love beautiful cosmetics more than the average girl, perfectly posh packaging is a bigger seller than the product inside sometimes. Too Faced is one of those brands that combines great products and lovely packaging. Regretfully I do not own as much of the brand as I would like but the Holiday collection will soon change that. I'm in love with the rococo frames and dream-like illustrations, I might have to buy every palette. The products inside promise to be as gorgeous as the fanciful casings.

Viva La Juicy Ad Campaign

I love pretentious perfume ads--there's nothing quite like getting dressed in 19th century lingerie and making love to a giant perfume bottle while a French woman whispers to the camera.



There are a lot of things I do like about the ad. I like seeing women in their beauty routine, there is something about the transformation process that speaks to me. I love the unkempt French-girl aesthetic. That bottle with its perfect pink bow. Lastly I love the fantasy of the ad, after all isn't that what pretentious perfume ads are all about?

Marc Jacobs Fall 2011

Marc Jacobs put everything that I love about fall dressing in one collection--polka dots, velour, lace--and infused them with 1930s style and some S&M couture. The result is retro perfection.





If you like the look The Limited pulled a lot of their fall inspiration from this collection (and Jason Wu's) just as NY&Co channeled Gucci. Happy shopping.

Style Diary: A Little Nautical

This is a kicky little outfit I put together for a very hot day in July. My inspirations were retro nautical pinups and the desperate need to stay cool. My solution was knits and barely-there accessories.

Thursday's Movie Review - Funny Girl (1968)

Funny Girl (1968) is a rags to riches tale about a girl making it big on Broadway as a comedienne. Fannie Brice (Barbara Streisand) experiences the highs and lows of show business and experiences a whirl-wind and doomed romance with the professional gambler Nicky Arnstein. Set in the 1910's the movie is all about the costumes, each outfit Barbara Streisand wears is worth pouring over in every minute detail. The leopard coat and cloche worn in the theater, the purple dress she wears to her dinner with Nicky, and the train-station outfit are most memorable for me.



Streisand carries the movie and the plot is secondary to her charms. I never experienced her talents for myself so the movie was very eye-opening for me, I understand now why so many people love her. Watch this one with your BFF and a bag of popcorn.

Weekly Expense Report: Mad Men Edition

There has not been a Weekly Expense Report for awhile now in preparation for the Mad Men Collection launched at Banana Republic this Thursday. I went hog wild trying on every piece of the collection. Lucky for my wallet my boobs are unforgiving toward such structured styles--while many of the dresses looked great from the front my boobs looked tortured from the sides. I'm very happy with my purchases but I'm still dying for the black cat-eye sunglasses that apparently nobody carries in store.


I've been drooling over this leopard print trench ($198) for weeks and called on Thursday to put the coat on hold. The pattern is slightly shimmery, the material perfectly light-weight as a trench should be, and the lining divine. The cut really stands out--the waist is nipped in and the bottoms flares over the hips way more than the photo shows, a very 1950's silhouette! It is so chic and timeless I will be wearing this for decades!


The lace tipped Joan dress ($150) worked the best for my figure. The material is beautiful and I love the lace details at the hem and shoulders. The cowl neckline accommodates an ample chest and I was even able to zip it up all by myself! I will be getting my Holloway on at work in this number.


Mr. Anachronistic Style will be getting his Don Draper on in the tailored slim two-button suit blazer ($375). He was in the market for a suit blazer that could be casual or dressy and this even looked amazing over his jeans and T-shirt in the store. He now has two suits for wherever life may take him.


Of course the matching tailored slim suit pants ($150) had to come home with us too. They fit him like a glove.


I've been meaning to buy this book ever since I read the review that T.Lo gave it. I'll be thumbing through it in the coming weeks but you can get your copy here ($27).


I have vowed to buy at least one top on every shopping trip until I build up my collection. This bottle green lace tee ($40) made it easy to keep my promise. Looks amazing with a pencil skirt or with cropped 1950's cigarette pants. Don't forget the pearls!


I'm so in love with the full skirts everyone is carrying this fall, they make the waist look so tiny! I opted for this teal grosgrain waist pleated skirt ($80) because black is just so ordinary.


Every fashionista no matter what era needs jeans. I wore my jeggings out last year and had to throw them away at the beginning of summer. The 1969 mid-weight high-rise legging jean ($70) is perfectly cuffable for now and perfectly tuckable for later. Love that high waist so much, low-rise jeans never did anybody's muffin top any favors!

NY & Co does Gucci!

These promo pics from NY & Co's Fall campaign has me so excited. They're pulling heavily from Gucci's Fall 2011 mobster chic collection and I'm in love! Those hats, those gloves, those jewel tones! You can bet I'll be hitting them up in the accessories department once this stuff hits stores!

Blake Lively's Mod Style

Blake Lively channeled the 1960's for Glamour magazine. Makes me want to keep working on that beehive tutorial I posted a couple weeks ago and pair it with a smoky eye instead of the liquid eyeliner I was planning. J'Adore all those shoes!

Louis Vuitton Resort 2012

A collection inspired by Sophia Copolla that combines fashion from the 1930's-1960's is the only thing that can get me looking forward to next summer. Each piece belongs on a rich young ingenue, the kind of girl who rolls out of bed looking fabulous. Who doesn't want to be that girl? Pay attention to the careful use of cloche hats and bright accessories.

Turquoise + Pink = LOVE LOVE LOVE!

Choosing colors for your flat sets the tone for your entire life, nothing energizes you quite like color. The turquoise and pink combination is so cheerful you'll approach your day as if you just ran a marathon and had five cups of coffee.





As an apartment dweller I believe in the power of black + white spaces with sharp jolts of color like the living room above: you can easily change the color scheme with the seasons or your mood (imagine the room above with yellow slip-covered chairs and a few accessory changes for example!) While the living room is serene notice how the color palette is amped for the workspace above? An office should be inspiring and energizing so kill it with color. More wildly inspiring turquoise and pink combos. I adore the French provincial feel of the first one, the wallpaper and antique settee are perfect for the rococo lover. The second one is so 1960's mod that I can't get enough of those turquoise chairs. The transition from the turquoise bedroom to the pink bathroom in the third one demonstrates inspired color-cross-pollination (notice the pink pictures and pink dish on the desk that brings the bathroom's colors into the bedroom?) As for the last one, let's just say that if I had to choose to spend the rest of my life with Mr. Anachronistic Style or the pink striped rococo couch above I would choose the couch.
